The History of the United Arab Emirates National Day

The National Day of the United Arab Emirates is a cherished national occasion deeply rooted in the nation’s memory and pride. Celebrated annually on the 2nd of December, it marks the historic moment in 1971 when the Union of the United Arab Emirates was proclaimed signalling the dawn of a new era of unity, progress, and prosperity, and the beginning of a journey led by visionary leaders devoted to the service of their people and nation.

On this glorious day, the founding of the Union was announced under the wise leadership of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may his soul rest in peace, together with his fellow Founding Fathers, the Rulers of the Emirates, who joined hands and hearts to build a modern and unified nation founded upon the principles of justice, equality, and cooperation. The UAE thus emerged as a unique model of unity and national solidarity in the region and the world.

The Union was initially formed by six Emirates Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, and Fujairah with Ras Al Khaimah joining shortly thereafter in February 1972, completing the union of the seven Emirates under one flag, one leadership, and one national identity.

This historic event marked a defining moment in the region’s modern history. Within a remarkably short time, the United Arab Emirates became a leading example of sustainable development, comprehensive progress, and human-centered growth guided by wise leadership that placed the citizen at the core of its national vision and development policies.

Today, the UAE stands as one of the most advanced, prosperous, and forward looking nations in the world  a global centre for innovation, development, and tolerance  thanks to the wise vision of its leadership and the collective efforts of its people.
